Learn the basic rules of the United States legal system.

Understanding Civil and Criminal Suits

In the U.S., if you are involved in a dispute you have the right to take your case to court to be resolved. A civil suit is a judicial case in which you, the plaintiff, are accusing someone else, the defendant, of having prejudice against you. The process, known as litigation, may occur in cases of breach of contract, destruction of property, or bodily injury. Civil suits are completely separate from criminal proceedings, which may involve the representation of an attorney, and can have dramatically different outcomes.

The United States Legal System

Learn the rules of the legal system. They are like instructions, if you don’t know them yet, you have less chances of winning the game. A lot of peple ask me how the legal system works in the U.S. or what is the difference between a federal or state law; or between a civil case or a criminal case. My answer is always the same: “The legal system is like the instructions of a game that you just bought. If you don’t understand them, not only are you not going to kow how to play the game, but also you will have less chances of winning.”
